Evaluation

Beginning draft...

My media product involvers the representation of ‘Adam’s’ disability, his mental illness and cerebral palsy, based on real life conditions, this fly on the wall documentary reflects from the documentaries I have research into such as ; ‘Dispatches’, ‘Torrettes’ and ‘why are thin people not fat’ which usually look at a social acceptance, personal positive responses and development and backing this up with factual relevant information, that we as a audience can interoperated in different perspectives due to our societies ideologies on incidences throughout the media.
The Mis en scene in documentary needs to involve a naturalistic circumstances, props, clothing, sounds, camera angles and locations. That can be easily related to the subject in hand. primarily throughout a documentaries lighting should always be natural as possible, as we don’t want it to look quirky . It would be taken as seriously, but there can be exceptions for artificial lighting, for instance in low lighted areas like tombs and caves in historical documentaries and for wildlife programs to create a ‘photographic’ (barthes) element.

Camera shots, that are usually involve are lots of rapid multiple shots, moving or stationary with basic visual effects with text. The shots that are constructed are somewhat photographic, each shot is aliened to be a photograph, pleasing to the viewers eye, as a passive audience this is probably dismissed by most of the public. ¬-Animated text involves information about the sequence that is being situated on the screen, this usually involves information about the Character/ person shown or facts and figures, so we can get a clear understanding on what is going on.
Characters/the people involved in the documentary are somewhat voluntary but selected as they are ideal for what they have been selected for, because as a producer you can select the person that you want to involve in you documentary e.g. the characters situation and circumstances of lifestyle. You would ask you self if you broadcast to 6,000,000 viewers, the subject is about drug use, and the affects thay have on young people will they understand the condition and empathy you want to project across to your audience.
Digetic/ non-digetic sounds are as followed, Soundtracks, voice and sound effects, important within a documentary.
Many aspects of a documentary aren’t created/ setup in a documentary, as it is a documentation of something or someone, but to some extent it is because you as a producer you have the power to choose the location, the characters involved and how it will be presented through the lens, it is key to capture the subject in unworthy situation, for example selected a family which is situated in luxury villa, rather than in a suburban area in a council flat it wouldn’t acceptable as you want to create this atmosphere around the character that they are isolated and far beyond control.
There are many conventions in a documentary but they seem quite bleak and unrecognisable as we are quite a passive audience. As above I have stated a few of the codes and conventions throughout the media, which make a production successful. But throughout each generation codes and conventions adapt due to our growth in technology, on what is achievable within the making, as cameras become more manoeuvrable and the exploration within ideas have become broader because society has become more intelligent.

The choice of disability was a person influence due to own experience to consider basing our main task on. Using such a emotional subject to base the extract on, we were thinking hopefully it would grasp the audience attention.
I have chosen to represent a specific disability in society, and discusses the feelings within one particular household, its is displayed as some sort of fly on the wall production. The codes within this particular genre, well there isn’t a particular genre as such in as a documentary attempts to display the deception of people, places or situations within reality as it is not fictional.
The representation of our documentary that should be portrayed to our designated audience is, it is a natural as possible, and realistic as possible, this should be obvious throughout the production, within out soundtracks selected, the camera angles chosen and the pace of the cuts/edits the digetic/non digetic adn location (mise en scene).

The section of society that should that should be interested in our documentary are those that like to engaged within self educating and seeking information. As ours displays a serious subject with facts and first hand opinions on the matter. The ‘representation’ of our documentary

In a book published in 2001 called ‘Introduction to Documentary’ (Indiana University Press) Bill Nichols defines the following six modes/sections of documentary
The Poetic Mode 'reassembling fragments of the world', a transformation of historical material into a more abstract, lyrical form, usually associated with 1920s and modernist ideas.

-The Expository Mode 'direct address', social issues assembled into an argumentative frame, mediated by a voice-of-God narration, associated with 1920s-1930s, and some of the rhetoric and polemic surrounding World War Two
The Observational Mode as technology advanced by the 1960s and cameras became smaller and lighter, able to document life in a less intrusive manner, there is less control required over lighting etc, leaving the social actors free to act and the documentarists free to record without interacting with each other

-The Participatory Mode the encounter between film-maker and subject is recorded, as the film-maker actively engages with the situation they are documenting, asking questions of their subjects, sharing experiences with them. Heavily reliant on the honesty of witnesses'

-The Reflexive Mode demonstrates consciousness of the process of reading documentary, and engages actively with the issues of realism and representation, acknowledging the presence of the viewer and the modality judgements they arrive at. Corresponds to critical theory of the 1980s

-The Performative Mode acknowledges the emotional and subjective aspects of documentary, and presents ideas as part of a context, having different meanings for different people (often autobiographical)

These sections/ criteria’s of the theory developmental are part of genre due to the adaptation of society, and how its introducing new technology though out generations of documentary production, and how then film makers challenge conventions and broadened the boundaries that documentaries can explore.

The effectiveness is the combination of each ancillary is due to the continuity within the fonts, colours, characters and language used. With the double page spread there is a clear link due to main central image, as Adam is the main focus of our documentary it is highly relevant that we included him in the magazine listing. Also the fonts and colours are exactly the same to the main task as I want the pieces to connotate throughout

Using the ideology of ‘Barthes’ the connotations of the main central image of Adam are; the clothing that he is wear are quite dull, reasonably urban and the jacket has a hood. These represent Adams deception and masculinity. The anger seen on his face and the firm grip of the camera shows, anger and his control over this documentary, as this is a representation of his life. The white/ grey background is simply there to show professionalism and to draw your attention towards look at Adam’s aesthetics. The quote that is above Adam is there to show Adam’s place within the documentary, to show 1st hand feedback, and facts discussing the issues withheld.

I think that I have represent the unique selling point quite clearly, as for a start we have chosen to do a subject in reality in which a lot of families suffer from around the UK, we discuss the difficulties within ‘cerebral palsy’ with facts and first hand evidence from a voluntary family, they have been filmed for this production. They then explain the compications and the successful elements of Adam. Also as it is directed towards the ‘channel 4’ media this would fit quite nicely with Horizon’s documentaries such as ‘why thin people are not fat’, the codes and conventions such as camera angles, soundtracks and narrative are somewhat similar.

There are many different media platform that could involved with our documentary due to the producers being ‘Channel 4’ advertising this documentary would be easy as this is a production company which is highly successful and trusted by the general public. Website would included snippets and adverts for the production, channel radio station and podcasts would play a our radio ad, magazines for instances like ‘TV Magazine’, TV choice and ‘TV satellite, would all display the double page spread that we’ve created due to its relevance, also this text product could also be excesses on online magazines, like ‘Hello’ due to the growth of a intergrading media with technology. Producing such things as digital open a new market on seeing information as it can be seen on thousands of portable products.

Here is one of two of the minor production tasks. This is our the Radio Advert.
Edited on premiere pro the sequence involves clips from the extract but edited to create more atmosphere, due to the length.
The section at the edit stating when the program is on a the channel its situated on was my voice recorded with the laptops microphone on 'audacity' the noise was removed the pitch was decreased, the tempo was altered and then amplified. After that it was placed into premiere pro the pitch was then alter along with the fine tune.

Below is the double page magazine listing that advertises our documentary.
The central image is a photograph of Adam this has be altered by increasing the images brightness and contrast, (to make the background a clear and crisp white as the it was photographer on a white backdrop to begin with). Then the photo's 'green channel' had its brightness increased to create a slight tint to it. Lean toward creating some sort of lomo photography. This tint also add this vintage feel to it (quite 80s).
Simply the main headline of the documentary is on the left hand side, the text above the 'Adam rush' is in a quite sophisticated font, resembling style and seriousness.
The font of, 'Adam Rush' is simply to show continuity withing the main task and the ancillary task (The same reason for the colours chosen).

Click For a better resolution
This is my double page magazine listng created on photoshop. The writen task its self was created on photoshop. The boxes have been created from the 'rectangular lasso tool' with a colour alteration, then the box right hand side at the top was added to a new layer and the opacity percentage was altered so it would become transparent.

These images below just resemble the steps i tooking within creating this.

These are just some examples of some other double page spreads for documentaries, the level of skill of this are quite poor, we have looked at several others, that are produced by the main production companies for example channel 4 and the BBC and the codes and conventions that are involved within those pieces are quite simple to reproduce.

Photos Associated with Adams Life andd his art work...
Above are the images we have to present in the documentary, to establish Adams character, within in the documentary. Seeing these images of Adam and Stuart the audience may sympathise towards Adam, as they represents his vulnerability as a child and the difficulties he is going to face in the future. These slides/ collages were created on Photoshop cs5 and arranged to look this way.

Also there is a second slide that involves Adam but this is representing him in a completely different way, in the slide that isn’t show Adam as a child is his art and photography work, we want to present Adam in a different light. (Showing his skills and what he could develop). They are examples of his A Level art and photography work.
With the images we have saved them after we scanned them in as JPEG's. so they can be easily manipulated into other programs.

Soundtracks

Links of the full songs will be in the descripition of the youtube video.

Here are the soundtracks that we have decide to use for the documentary. We have selected some of them, the ones that link in with the diolog and sound correctly.
Chosing the right soundtrack is vital to any production, and our documentary is no exseption, during the our clip we want to ephasis the emotions/ help you as an audience on what you should be feeling in each section of the extract.

Here is a Draft/snipit of the title For out documentary. First designed on on photoshop, with taking in account Channel 4's basic colours and arangment to there productions,by simply following the 'Channel 4 Identity Style Guide' it gives you a detailed analysis on the fonts, design and the logo.
E.g How the logo should be presented ect.

As this is my first draft i belive that it isnt as good as it could be the, it needs some more animation to the '4' and the main colour needs the be altered to.

The Fonts/ text has created with photoshop. There is no particular font that i could that is used for channel 4, as it has been copyrighted. So i search through out 'dafont' for a suitable font that looks as identical.

Below is the font that i have chosen. It is called 'Sansation'

The text inside the black text box was simply edited by useing the 'type tool' writing the correct information within it, then changing the font colour to white or #ffffff and after adding a new layer below to add a black retangular box for the white text to sit above.
These boxes above are going include when relivent, they will fade in and out during the correct clip.
Colour code - #fd610e

This paticular orange text boxed png file will be incuded within the main title and will also be a onscreen animation for the start of the house clip after the fade fade from black during the extract.

Presentation

Check out this SlideShare Presentation:

Here is our storyboard for our main task keeping with 'idea 2' below, we will follow this as closely as possible. Using the documentarys in the research as a refernce this is our detailed plan on how our documentary is going to be produced for examp. With video camera that films on a Pal 60 resalsion we will edited it in Adobe premire pro, on a widscreen format, that will be later on exported as a AVI so it can be veiw on youtube.

This was edited in a DV - pal widescreen 48khz format which is a 16:9 Ratio in TV specification.

The Plot to our production that includes a detailed outline on what we should produce

Once we had created our basic idea we created this story board and above. We have planned the extract as clearly and detailed as possible. If you have watched the examples in our research you will see several elements from each documentary combined.

The Neo Natzi documentary is a influence due the layout style and the way they construct there documentary we wanted to form a layout to fit are storyline idea.

The PowerPoint above is a 11 page original story board of what and the order of which we want to construct are documentary.

Basic information about are final idea

- Basic plot for this idea would be based on a individuals life.A charter that has a issues ,which is Celabal Palsy and following the life of that character.Showing the struggle for the character and their family, including home and outside environment shots.

- Make as realistic as possible, combined personal experience, and emphasise the issue.
- Character that will be used is Adam Rush would suffers with Celabal Palsy ( a student in are six form center). One of the reason we want to take forward this idea is because the inspiration came from the fact my group partener for this project Stuart Rush is a twin and the story line fits effectively.

-The story line will incorporate both Adam and Stuart Rush as they both have the disability and the relationship and home life is a fantastic storyline to take forward.

Characters are as followed
The Main character with the disability is Adam Rush as Adam, he is the main focus of our whole documentary. His twin brother Stuart Rush as Stuart. He is Adam identical twin within the production and in reality. Adams Mother is Julie King as Jane Rush, an actor for our production and Adams Friend Joe Hill as Henry Ford. He will be the outside man.
The Locations that we have chosen are: Adams home, some thing that resembles a Gym environment, a park, an area in which you can play basketball, a supermarket such as Asda or Morrisons and garden.

Here a simple break down of our story board.
First 5 seconds = channel 4 Logo that we will create.

Documentary powerpoint breif

View more presentations from jjhjeffery

This PowerPoint explains our progression on our production on choices that we have made, the theory's we have looked at and vital codes and conventions. Such as mise an sene and camera angles . The reasoning for this PowerPoint is that, now we have specific ideas we can proceed and create a documentary with knowing what is expected.

Wednesday, 9 March 2011

This is our preliminary task, we decided to do a conversation that involved some exchange of some dialogue with some basic camera angles.
- First shot is a long shot pan that is on a slight low angle
- Followed by a high angled medium shot
- Then a medium shot pan
- After is low angle medium shot with slight movement to the left
- Then a medium shot, which follows the character sitting down
- A medium shot/ side view
- Close up of characters(easiest way to establish the emotion of each person), that switch back and forth due to which one is speaking
This was more of a chance to start editing with premiere pro as this program is new to me.
This was edited in a DV - pal standard 48khz format which is a 4:3 Ratio on TV specs.

Plans/ ideas for the Short extract for our documentary
Ideas for what our extract could be based on then we narrowed it down to two and gone into more depth on what we could create.

- Drug use issues in the UK.
- Obesity
- Twins
- Disability,in regards to Celabal palsy
- Respect in today's youth towards parents

Idea 1 Drugs
These examples would be a good reference point to follow.

Here is the clip that we got the basic idea of wanting to doing it on this subject.
Discuss the pros and cons of drugs, a look into the subject of drug use ect.
Clips of drug use, close ups that involve only shots of the use, hiding the identity of user.
Closely linked to documentaries such as dispatches and BBC 3.
Also the House style and codes and conventions will be easily recognised.
Voice over will included a narrated sequence followed by options on 1st hand experiences.
Idea 2
Disability
Show the difficulties faced within society on one or several disabilities.
This would also be closely related to documentaries such as dispatches and ect. (in the research)
Focus on a particular disability which is explored into more depth.
Make as realistic as possible, combined personal experience, elaborate the idea, and emphasise the issue.
Make sure that it is also educational, Include fact/statistic.

The idea we have chosen to proceed with the second idea. It will be based on disability¬.
This extract will me a combined emulation, what I mean by this is in will have aspects that are recognised from the documentaries that are in my research. E.g. Neo Nazis, Truth about food and Why Thin People Not Fat?. For example the camera angles used (the medium shots the interview each character, the long shots to establish situations and over the shoulder shots) and how the voice overs are edited into sequence of each clip, also transitions we included (fade to/from black)

Research

Research for documentaries

To start of the initial idea of doing a documentary for our main task i gathered ideas in which we could create something similar. We need to look at the cameras angles, soundtracks (digetic or non digetic), dialogue/ Language and editing, to appeal to a designated audience.

Blumer and Katz theory, A theory that was produced which metaphorically splits the media into for incomplex sections below, the sections ‘Information’, ‘Personal Identity’, ‘Integration and Social Interaction’ and ‘Integration and Social Interaction’ area the areas that certain programs of the media sink into.

Starting of with, ‘Information’, this is usually as a passive audience you want to find out suitable information on society and conditions, also to seek out advice on particular matters, opinion or decisions or maybe for general interest and self-esteem, and to gain knowledge or to self educated yourself on a matter that you know very little about. For ‘Personal Identity’ we as an audience look for insight on finding aid towards personal values and finding role models of behaviour/or style (people of similar character) and gaining knowledge into one's self and identifying with valued other (in the media) ,and for Integration and Social Interaction we want to gain a gaining information into circumstances of other, to understand there situation, and to identify characters with others and gain a sense of belonging, to find a subject/ basis for conversation and social interaction and to connect with family, friends and society, and for Entertainment to escape or to diverted from personal problems, to relax and get a cultural or aesthetic enjoyment e.g., emotional release, or for sexual arousal.

Dispatches the truth about fod follows the typical convetions of a documentary, with its simplistic camera shot, prodominatly focusing on the subject matter with close ups, pans on a eyeline veiw.
Simply there is a introduction about the program including snipits of the program, there is a voice over giving us a breif summary on what the program is about, and giving us direct hyperthetical questions in a formal female voice, which could be suggested to be a little patronising.
Dispatches displays facts and figers in some sort of harsh manner that usaual includes the public, they like to put the spotlite on ideviduals to see how much then know. (they like to prove there audience wrong)giving the society a shock.
In this paticualr episode they interview a family and incorperate a family with there concent and moniteter there calorie consumption, to see if there theory of only eating one meal a day, but then sectretly filmimg in other locations (E.g. where they work.

Further on in program show that there isnt a variaty of food for a infant or child in the family resaraunt. Also there was research into one paticluar resaraunt in ascience museum that specificly educates children about eating health, they are controdicting them selves.

The New yourk department of health has included a calorioe consumtion lable for they food in there restaurants and dipatches look apon the matter and resaeach into further detal into reasons why the british dont do the same

Here is a documenatry produced by 'Current TV'. this documentary expores the trouble within Neo Nazis in Russia, on how that strong racial political views blind them selves form what is rightfully there's.
At the beginning there Small snippet behind the title of the program, with a soundtrack played over the top. Those 2 clips situated in that title defines the documentary genre immediately. (determination, masculinity and selectivity).
The first camera shot involves a man, Looks like a guy selected from the public to explain the situation, his voice continues over the following clips, they present the culture and society, (but you realise that this guy is a Russian rock composer).
The soundtracks through out are simply there to create atmosphere, to portray the emotion that the producer wants to direct across.
There is more than one voice over during, what I call the first section, this is showing multiple opinions on the subject, elaborating that is effecting allot of people.
They show clips of very violent scenes within the Neo Nazi culture,(there strong racial hate towards immigrants) those shots of the violence are filmed on hand held items.
There are several clips of the immigrants (the Neo's 'threats' to there economy)
All clips that involve interviews a direct mode of address, eye-line view and a medium/ close up head and shoulders shot.
The voice overs that discuss the issues with the immagrants during this episode is a male, well spoken, narrative toned voice.

Hypodermic Needle Theory
This is another theory that you can apply to the media and my production.
'The magic bullet' or know as the Hypodermic Needle theory is based on the human nature on how some of use consume the media passives. The "Magic Bullet" theory metaphorically speaking 'fires' from the media gun and travels into the viewer's head. The same idea with the Hypodermic Needle, it suggests that the media injects its messages into the passive audience. This passive audience is immediately affected by these messages. If its a product that you should by or if its something that you should do.The easiest was through advertising to 'inject' is to form some catchy slogan or some easily recognised theme tune.
Todrov theory
Tzvetan Todorov a Bulgarian structuralist, create this narrative theory in the 1960s.
he discussed how stories had very basic structures, it would begin with an equilibrium, then have a disruption, that is which is usually resolved within the end. Resorted back the 'normal' for the character
fiction.
Barthes
Barthes a French literary theorist created this theory of ‘The Photographic Message'. He simple discussed how a in the media how an image is represented and how the is can be interoperated, and what it actually co notates.

Now this is a production of the BBC on a disability known as 'tourettes' this illness is esaily established in the opening sequence. it starts of with a long shot of him and his mother entering the Asda. Then a voice over kicks in, the voice is a well soken female that uses a diologe of a fairly educated standard.
Follows the life of two paticular people discussing there difficulties that they have faced through out the life.

Tuesday, 18 January 2011

Here is a BBC production created by Horizon, this immediately has a different target audience due to the opening sequence of a medium range shot of some character showing there body to the camera.(The reason for this will be self explanatory when you get further on in the episode). the female speaking sees quite well educated, but is seem far more casual to other BBC productions. Then the next shot involved some time lapsing. the clips has been speed up and the eye-line/ close up of the character seems to be quite basic. But the combination of the of the first sequence of shots and effect seem quite youthful. There is a narrative voice over that comes in to introduce the program. This introduction (the series of clips) of this program that last about 1 minuet gives you glimpses of the program, intended so that you know what you are going to watch. Then there is some clips of new reports that are related to the issue in the documentary. Following that is a series establishing shots (long shots, medium shots and close ups) with a soundtrack and a voice over describing the challenge/ situation that awaits the character involved,
When they involve the clips of the prison, the soundtracks emotion changes, it become more sudden and shock heart raising music.

480 x 249 ratio

Produced by channel 4 this is a episode in a ongoing series which have the same main objective 'swaping two wives and showing them a different life style'
Starts off with a narraition explaining the familes, is male, with a simple monologe. (As it is clear there target is, its for a fairly educated working class audience.
Camera angles are quite simplistic, they invove lot of medium shots, and long shots to establish characters a location (mis en scene).
This program has a contrived format that plays on stereotypes, they deliberately put a square pig in a round hole, in doing that it makes good television.
One mother is very layed back, loves to go out and get involved within parties and self pampering, shes lazy and leaves all her work (cooking and cleaning) for the boyfriend to sort out.
The second mother has a complete differnce perspective on how life works, she is very organized, likes to be occupied and involved withing making the children happy. THe man in the house hold does nothing within the house. He belives that its a womans job the to do the chores as he has no time. But as we see, he does have the time and space to do it.
In this paticular episode there is a good result/ conclusion as both females of the family relise they both have been blinded by there set ways.
I think the ideas behinf this paticular producting is, one to create drama between each other, as family sterotypes usally clash, and two to show how familes at the other end of the spectrum live(displaing different situations).

Above is some information on how documentaries are categorised through out the stages of production.

Media Main production task.

We were given a brief that had a series of 10 main production elements to them that was speculated over the media, then those ten questions had little sub questions in which you had to produce two of them to contribute to the final outcome
For our main task we have chosen to explore the question involving filming a extract for a documentary, which is around 5 minuets in length.
Also we will have to create a double page magazine listing, and a advert for a radio station.
At the moment we are not definite what our subject in hand will be for the documentary, hopefully i will get a clear idea on what i could produce for moving image piece.
